KRLX mix #37 (5//22/2019)

Anti-war protests. Racial unrest. The Manson Family. Stonewall. Chappaquiddick. The Stones at Altamont.

A laugh riot, 1969 was not.

But from Woodstock to the lesser-known Harlem Cultural Festival, it was a musical cornucopia. In this edition of Where The Action Was, DJ Owen looks back on this turbulent but sonically blessed year. Unless you are at a Bed-In with Yoko Ono or have an Aquarian Exposition or moon landing to get to, you’re going to want to catch the “Spirit of ’69”!

P.S. If you never heard the story of how one of the most amazing and integral backing tracks in rock history came to be, check out Merry Clayton and Mick Jagger relating the genesis of “Gimme Shelter” in 20 Feet From Stardom.

P.P.S. Your admin is not sure she buys the implication that neither Merry nor her L.A.-based agent was familiar with The Rolling Stones in 1969, but it’s still a good story.
