KRLX mix #67 (3/4/2021)
In the final throes of editing his double distinction–earning comps thesis on late 70s-early 80s U.S. disinflation policy and Black unemployment, DJ Owen created a WTAW episode that captures the nervous energy of that downbeat era.
Not surprisingly, Springsteen, bard of working-class angst and resilience, is the guiding light here, both behind the mic and behind the scenes. (Quiz: Name the three Boss-penned tracks on this playlist that became hits for other artists.) He’s joined by Jersey compatriots Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes and the inimitable Little Steven (aka writer, rocker, producer, actor, and radio impresario Steven Van Zandt) & the Disciples of Soul. Angry young men Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, and Graham Parker also get their licks in, demonstrating that the anxieties of the time weren’t confined to our side of the pond.
The world economy may have been going to hell in a handbasket, but these artists made the pain sound awesome. So check out this list, or Bruce is going to figure you Musta Got Lost (somewhere down the line).
