KRLX mix #18 (10/8/2018)
Country you know. Funk you’re familiar with. But country funk? What the heck is that? If you’re not already acquainted with the genre, allow DJ Owen to introduce you to country music before it got so conservative and white. We’ve got Bobbie Gentry lusting after the preacher’s son, Tony Joe White singing about an incarcerated Satan, and Vicki Lawrence advising us not to “trust [our] soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer.” (Good advice.) Countercultural country isn’t the only story, though. The cream of Memphis and Muscle Shoals soul is also here, and whether you’re doing the push and a pull or being made to feel like a natural woman, this playlist will surely cause you to break out into a “Southern Sweat.”
