KRLX mix #28 (2/20/2019)
It was a bold show-opening gambit: 42 seconds of nothing but the spare plunkings of a string bass and a whisper of percussion. Then a tenor sax breaks in, and it’s off to the races for Charles Mingus’s propulsive “II B.S.” After that, horns are a frequent presence in the episode, alternately sultry, sassy, strident, and soulful. A mix of rare soul, jazz, Tropicália, gospel funk, and Afro rock, “Pasley’s Lunar Rotation II” brings the heat.

P.S. It also brings “Green Onions,” arguably rock music’s most famous instrumental, and the Amen break in The Winstons’ “Amen, Brother,” reputed to be one of the most widely sampled recordings in history.
