KRLX mix #59 (11/5/2020)
You may know it as indie rock, alt-rock, or commercial alternative. Whatever you call it, the 1990s airwaves were full of it.
This playlist leans toward the power-poppy end of the genre (Teenage Fanclub, Matthew Sweet, Fountains of Wayne), while not neglecting riot grrrl-adjacent acts such as Veruca Salt and Liz Phair and up-the-middle-the-plate representatives like Green Day, Superdrag, and Weezer. All in all, it’s a satisfying slab of (occasionally distorted) guitar rock that will make you want to crank the volume knob.
Below: DJ Owen, age 13, shown meeting Robert Harrison of Cotton Mather after a 2012 show at Off Broadway in St. Louis. Mid-set, Harrison (possibly as the result of some maternal intervention) called out, “Hey, Owen — what should we play?” and then promptly obliged by launching into his request, track #24 on this list, “She’s Only Cool.”
