KRLX mix #61 (1/21/2021)
What they lacked in polish, garage rockers made up in proto-punk passion. Essentially turned into a genre by the 1972 Lenny Kaye–conceived compilation Nuggets, garage rock encompasses the fuzzbox-and-Farfisa efforts of young DIYers from Massachusetts (The Remains) to New Jersey (The Knickerbockers) to Ohio (The Human Beinz) to Minnesota (The Litter) to Idaho (Paul Revere & The Raiders) to California (The Standells, Syndicate of Sound, Thee Midniters) and beyond.
Speaking of beyond, acts like Los Bravos (Spain), The La De Da’s (New Zealand), Jacques Dutronc (France), Thor’s Hammer (Iceland), The Easybeats (Australia), and others demonstrate that the insistent, three-chord energy of garage rock had more than stateside appeal. So get aboard “Trans-Beat Airways” and fly the rockin’ skies!
