KRLX mix #60 (11/12/2020)

In planning his tribute to the year of your admin’s birth, DJ Owen deemed 1966 “the peak of human artistic output.” (Take that, Renaissance!)

While that may be overstating the case slightly, not even Maria von Trapp could do as good a job as 1966 did of assembling a few of his favorite things:

  • The British Invasion (“Taxman,” “Paint It Black,” “Substitute”)
  • Psychedelia (“Eight Miles High,” “Sunshine Superman”)
  • Stax tracks written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter (“B-A-B-Y,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’”)
  • Harpsichord-laden Baroque pop (“Walk Away Renee”)
  • Brian Wilson entering auteur territory (“Good Vibrations”)
  • Garage rock (“Wild Thing,” “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” “Come See Me”)
  • The supreme Supremes hit (“You Keep Me Hangin’ On”)
  • Folk-rock duos* (“The 59th Street Bridge Song,” “Stop! Get a Ticket”)
  • Blonde on Blonde–era Dylan (“I Want You”)

And that just scratches the surface of the annum’s musical riches, more of which are featured here. You can be sure that Nancy Sinatra’s boots did some walking — and that your ears will want to do some listening!

*Strictly speaking, The Clefs of Lavender Hill were a band, which centered on brother-sister duo Joseph and Loraine Ximenes (alias Travis and Coventry Fairchild).
